Byrne Stands With Gun Owners; Fights for the Second Amendment
Congressman Bradley Byrne (R-AL) today stood with Alabama’s sportsmen and gun owners by voting against a bill that would restrict the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans.
Congressman Byrne said: “Our Founding Fathers enshrined the right to keep and bear arms in our nation’s Constitution. Throughout our history, we have seen the importance of the Second Amendment for people to make a living, to provide for their families, and to protect their life and liberty.
“Today, I voted against H.R. 8, the Democrat-led gun control legislation that would greatly limit the Constitutional rights of Americans. Let’s be very clear on this, H.R. 8 will fail to prevent criminals from getting their hands on firearms. What H.R. 8 will do is violate the Constitutional rights of millions of Americans and turn responsible gun owners into criminals under federal law.
“One thing is for sure: I will always stand up for our Constitution, the Second Amendment, and the rights for gun owners in Alabama and around the United States.”
As a gun owner, Congressman Byrne is a leading Second Amendment supporter in Congress. Already this year, he has taken the following actions in support of the Second Amendment:
- Rejoined the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus
- Sponsored H.R. 38 – the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2019, which would allow an individual with a concealed carry permit to carry a handgun into or possess a handgun in another state that allows individuals to carry concealed firearms.
- Sponsored H.R. 155, the Hearing Protection Act, removing suppressors from the National Firearms Act (NFA), making it easier for hunters and sportsmen to protect their hearing at the range or in the field.
- Moved to strike the Democrat’s gun control proposal, H.R. 8, and force a House vote on national conceal carry reciprocity in it’s place.
Byrne outlined his support for the Second Amendment and opposition to the Democrat gun control bills during a speech on the floor of the House of Representatives. A transcript of the speech can be found below.
Congressman Byrne said: “Mr. Speaker, I rise in strong opposition to this bill.
“Let’s be very clear on this, H.R. 8 will not prevent criminals from getting their hands on firearms. What H.R. 8 will do is violate the Constitutional rights of millions of Americans.
“Under this bill, almost every time a lawful gunowner wants to transfer or sell a gun, he or she will have to go through a government sanctioned intermediary.
“Under this bill, no longer could I let my cousin or my neighbor borrow my weapon. If this bill becomes law, overnight, millions of law-abiding gun owners could suddenly be subject to federal prosecution.
“Of course, we all know that criminals are going to do what they already do: make illegal transfers of firearms!
“We have heard a lot about how this is going to be the most open Congress in history.
“Mr. Speaker, I filed an amendment that would strip out the text of H.R. 8 and replace it with nation-wide concealed carry reciprocity.
“Well, of course Mr. Speaker, the Democrat leadership blocked a vote on my amendment. What are they so afraid of? I guess they think they can shield their members from votes that protect the Second Amendment and benefit our nation’s law abiding gun owners.
“Well, Mr. Speaker, I have news for the majority. The gun owners of America are watching this debate. They know what H.R. 8 is all about, and they know this is just a sham to chip away at the Second Amendment and our Constitution.
“I will oppose this bill - and any bill - that goes against the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans. I urge my colleagues to join me in voting no and fighting against this assault on the Second Amendment.”
