One of President Donald Trump’s most popular positions on the campaign trail last year was a commitment to securing our nation’s borders. Since taking office, this has been a shared top priority between President Trump and the House of Representatives.
Arguably, Congress’s most important power is the power of the purse. Through funding bills, Congress has an important opportunity to set the direction of the government. Founding Father James Madison called it “the most complete and effectual weapon with which any constitution can arm the immediate representatives of the people”.
On June 17th, the USS Fitzgerald, a guided missile destroyer with the United States Navy, collided with a merchant vessel southwest of Tokyo, Japan. The collision resulted in the death of seven Navy sailors and an additional three crewmembers were injured.
With the House of Representatives out of session during the month of August for a District Work Period, I used the time to travel all across Southwest Alabama listening to the people I represent and seeing the challenges and opportunities facing our area firsthand.
Earlier this year, I was asked to compile my thoughts on leadership and what it means to be an effective leader. With students back in school, high school football season underway, and college football right around the corner, I wanted to share some highlights from my leadership journey with students, athletes, and others.

America has the most powerful Navy the world has ever seen. For centuries, our sailors have provided peace and stability around the globe. With over eighty percent of the world’s population living within sixty miles of the sea and ninety percent of world trade moving by sea, a strong and capable U.S. Navy is critical to a bountiful economy and the wellbeing of humanity.
Each August, Members of Congress head back to their home states for a District Work Period. I use this time to travel throughout my district and interact with the people I represent in Congress.
There has been a lot of noise coming out of Washington and in the national news media. If you listen to all the noise, you would think the only thing happening in our nation’s capital is staffing drama at the White House and an ongoing Russia investigation.
President Trump recently devoted a week to celebrating the importance of “Made in America” products with special events at the White House. I was pleased to see the President shining a spotlight on the many first-class items produced here in the United States.
