At least once a month, the House of Representatives goes out of session and Members of Congress are able to spend time visiting with constituents in their districts. Last week was one of these District Work Weeks. I wanted to briefly update you on some of the highlights from last week.
“Iran’s regime poses a grave threat, not only to Israel, but also to the peace of the entire world.” Those were the words of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he addressed a joint session of Congress last week.
We all have special veterans in our life. These are the countless men and women across the country who sacrifice so much in defense of our nation. They serve valiantly in conflicts across the globe as part of the United States military.
Our nation's roads, bridges, interstates and waterways are the lifeblood of our economy. From the founding of our nation, our leaders have realized the importance of having a safe, efficient system of roads. In fact, in the early 1800s President Thomas Jefferson put forward a national plan for the construction of ports, roads, and inland waterways.
Back in December, President Obama gave a major speech regarding the United States policy toward Cuba. The President said, “I do not believe we can continue doing the same thing for five decades and expect a different result.” In other words, the President is saying that when something isn’t working, we need to try a new approach.
By now, you may have heard the good news. Last week, the House passed H.R. 596, my bill to repeal Obamacare in its entirety. I was proud to champion this legislation on behalf of the families, small businesses and doctors in Southwest Alabama who have been hurt by this failed law.
As soon as I took the oath of office on January 6, I was ready to hit the ground running making a positive impact on behalf of the hardworking taxpayers in Southwest Alabama.
Article II, Section 3 of the United States Constitution reads: “He shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union.” In that spirit, last week President Obama traveled to the Capitol to deliver his State of the Union Address, the sixth such speech of his presidency.
Just last month, the Republican Congress made a promise to the American people. We promised to fight the Obama administration’s decision to give executive amnesty to many of those in this country illegally. Last week, the House acted on that promise.
Since being elected the Congressman for Alabama’s First Congressional District, I have heard from more constituents upset about ObamaCare than any other issue. As we kicked off the 114th Congress last week, the attention was once again back on ObamaCare.
